Continuing our recent fascination with all things Foxtrot, we all zipped through this early anthology of the popular comic strip by Bill Amend.

I really enjoy this comic strip, but after reading several different anthologies, the jokes are starting to feel a bit too recycled. Still, I really enjoyed seeing older versions of the characters. Like my beloved Garfield strip from my childhood, it's interesting to see how the artist's drawing style changes over time.

Since the book features strips from about more than two decades ago, quite a bit of the pop culture references are very dated, and our girls didn't get all of them. And I had to really laugh at the technology (computers, actual phones...with cords, VHS videos (and movie rental stores!), typewriters, etc.), since it's so ancient. It's a bit of nostalgia, since I remember very clearly what life was like back then.

I had to stop a moment when I read some dialogue from Jason calling the store-bought Valentine's Day cards, "queer" (p. 14). That was a commonly used pejoritive adjective in the 80s, but it's not common nor acceptable now, so it really stood out.

interesting quote:

"The exploitation of women is wrong. Magazines like this portray women as sex objects and nothing more. By allowing you to look at it, I'm telling you it's ok to think of women as meat, and I'm not about to do that." (p. 9)

On the whole, it's an entertaining book with many witty and sincere observations about family life in America. We all enjoyed reading it and it's perfect for reading when you are tired and don't want anything too substantial.

This is fine. I mean, if you like Foxtrot, you're gonna like this, but it's a collection of older strips; the copy I picked up was a reissue, so that was somewhat deceptive. Still, I enjoy Foxtrot and I enjoyed this, particularly the strips I hadn't seen before.

In this early collection of comic strips, the Fox family vacations in Hawaii, Peter must give up studying for a trigonometry test to help his blind girlfriend with her biology assignment, and Paige gets invited to the junior prom.

A rather mean, seldom funny, and horribly drawn comic strip. Shakespeare references on pages 62 and 98-100. The latter is already described in SHAKESPEARES AFTER SHAKESPEARE, Burt, ed.

Huge lack of variety in both drawings and... jokes? I didn't laugh enjoyably a single time. They're quite cute but with a pretty basic design. Huge lack of variety in both drawings and... jokes? I didn't laugh enjoyably a single time. They're quite cute but with a pretty basic design. ...more

The older the FoxTrot comic, the better. This collection was definitely a amazing one!

Interesting how the majority of daily strips used to be a full six day series.
